Description

The Shreveport Regional Jazz Ensemble (SRJE) was organized with a purpose to promote “Big Band Jazz – Keeping It Alive.” The organization is under the leadership of Mr. Louis C. Wells, Sr. and was established in 1980. He is assisted by Mr. Cleveland R. White and Mr. Donald Walters. The SRJE consist of eighteen musicians and two vocalists. It is the Shreveport Regional Jazz Ensemble's Mission to continue the legacy of live big band performances. It is the goal to form relationships with schools, communities, and persons of all ages. The aim is to promote and enhance music educational programs as well as provide entertainment for the public. The 20 professional musicians who comprise the SRJE are concern that if we don’t bring the music to the younger generation, they will not have another opportunity to acquire the training. Examples of the professional musicians include: Mr. Malcolm Spencer, Retired Assistant Band Director of the World Famed GSU Marching Band, Mr. Tom Yates, Former Featured Saxophone Soloist for the Legendary Percy Sledge Band, and Mr. Michael Hendrix, Director of GSU Symphonic Band. The ensemble performances include a wide variety of styles (Example: jazz, blues, gospel, show band, country, rhythm & blues, etc.). Members of the SRJE have provided forums to discuss opportunities that are available through colleges, the military, and professional endeavors. It is the ensemble's desire that their performances will generate interest and a genuine concern from the younger generation to continue the legacy of live big band performances.
