About

Hi! My name is Bess DeFord, I have been working with glass for a little over three years now. I first fell in love with glass blowing when I was in middle school. I always found the different techniques extremely fascinating. At 15 years old, I was able to visit my first hot shop and take my first short glass sculpting class. It was a simple paperweight class, but it grew my passion tenfold. At 19 years old I signed up for Sanctuary Glass Studio’s eight week course class. I started learning the basics of glass blowing while volunteering on the weekends. Six months later, I moved up to Shreveport to work at Sanctuary full-time. I started off as one of their glass blowing assistants and I worked at their gallery and marketing. As of now I still run their marketing and the gallery. But I have since become one of their full-time glass artists, teaching short term classes to the customers. Alongside teaching these classes, I’ve been able to explore different techniques in glasswork. I have worked with stained glass, lamp-working, glassblowing and glass sculpting. I’ve had the time of my life working with glass, I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Artist Statement

I have worked with multiple forms of glass art. I have dabbled in stained glass, lamp working, glass blowing, and glass sculpting. My main mediums are glass blowing and glass sculpting. Learning how to glass blow has been such a journey. Everything must be precise and perfect if you want an even and centered vessel. It teaches you how to multitask while focusing on fine details. One wrong move and it can lead to your whole project being ruined. It is exhilarating exploring different styles and techniques. Alongside all the different shapes you can create, there are endless color techniques you can add to your vessel. I love experimenting different ways to turn your every day vessels, such as wine glasses into complicated abstract art forms. It’s truly endless what you can do as far as glass blowing goes. I’ve more recently gotten into glass sculpting. I started off very simple, creating flowers. But everything changed when I created my first glass sculpted bird. It opened my eyes to the possibilities of glass sculpting. Since then I have pushed my abilities to experiment on shapes I never thought I could make. Not only have I sculpted other bird species, I’ve sculpted, squid, turtles, snails, whales, roses, cats, frogs, ice cream and so many more. Working with glass has truly been life-changing, I can’t wait to learn more.
